Top 10 Off-Road Trails for Motorcycles to Explore in Australia

Australia’s vast, rugged landscapes are a playground for off-road motorcyclists, offering everything from red desert dunes to alpine climbs. Whether you’re chasing adrenaline or solitude, these ten iconic trails deliver unforgettable rides.

Top 10 Off-Road Trails for Motorcycles to Explore in Australia

1. Canning Stock Route, Western Australia

Distance: 1,850 km | Difficulty: Extreme
One of the world’s longest and most remote tracks, the Canning Stock Route runs from Halls Creek to Wiluna. This historic cattle trail challenges riders with endless corrugations, sandy stretches, and scorching heat. Prepare thoroughly: fuel drops, spare parts, and survival gear are non-negotiable.

2. Simpson Desert Crossing, SA/NT/QLD

Distance: 500 km | Difficulty: Hard
Conquer over 1,100 sand dunes on this iconic crossing spanning three states. Start at the legendary Pink Roadhouse in Oodnadatta for last-minute supplies. The shifting dunes and extreme temperatures demand a reliable bike and sharp navigation skills.

3. Telegraph Track, Cape York, Queensland

Distance: 150 km | Difficulty: Hard
Part of Cape York’s Old Telegraph Line, the Telegraph Track is infamous for its river crossings and mud. Highlights like Gunshot Creek (a near-vertical drop) test even seasoned riders. Dry season visits (June–September) are best to avoid impassable bogs.

4. Blue Rag Range Track, Victorian High Country

Distance: 35 km | Difficulty: Moderate
Victoria’s Blue Rag Range Track rewards riders with panoramic alpine views. The steep, rocky climb to 1,500 metres is manageable for intermediate riders, but weather can turn quickly—pack layers and check forecasts.

5. Gibb River Road, Western Australia

Distance: 660 km | Difficulty: Moderate
Traverse the Kimberley’s heart on this rugged route dotted with river crossings and gorges. While not technically demanding, the corrugations and remoteness require endurance. Stop at El Questro Station for a mid-ride breather.

6. Climies Track, Cape York, Queensland

Distance: 40 km | Difficulty: Extreme
A Cape York classic, Climies Track serves up steep inclines, deep ruts, and thick mud. It’s a favourite for hardcore enduro riders—just don’t attempt it solo. Recovery gear and a powerful bike (like a KTM Enduro) are essential.

7. Bill Binns Track, Victorian High Country

Distance: 20 km | Difficulty: Hard
This technical trail in Victoria’s High Country features rocky descents and tight switchbacks. Built for experienced riders, it’s a proving ground for both skill and bike durability.

8. Lake Eyre Circuit, South Australia

Distance: 300 km | Difficulty: Moderate
Ride the edge of Australia’s largest salt lake, a surreal landscape that floods occasionally. The hard, flat surface allows for speed, but remote conditions mean you’ll need extra fuel and water.

9. Granville Harbour & Trial Harbour Loop, Tasmania

Distance: 80 km | Difficulty: Easy
Tasmania’s wild west coast delivers coastal cliffs and rainforest trails. The loop between Granville Harbour and Trial Harbour is ideal for beginners, with forgiving terrain and jaw-dropping ocean views.

10. Oodnadatta Track (via Pink Roadhouse), South Australia

Distance: 617 km | Difficulty: Easy
Follow this historic Outback route from Marree to Marla, passing the iconic Pink Roadhouse at Oodnadatta. While less technical, the track’s isolation and corrugations suit adventure bikes like the BMW R1300 GS.

Which State Has the Best Off-Road Trails?

It’s a tie! Western Australia boasts epic remote routes (Canning Stock Route, Gibb River Road), while Queensland’s Cape York tests limits with technical tracks. Victoria’s High Country offers alpine thrills, and South Australia’s deserts deliver raw adventure. Your preference decides!

I recently purchased a BMW GS 1300 from Cycle in Hornsby, and I couldn’t be happier with the experience. Brent was absolutely fantastic throughout the entire process—friendly, accommodating, and genuinely passionate about ensuring everything went smoothly. Nothing was too much trouble for him. He took the time to answer all my questions, provided expert advice, and made sure I felt completely confident in my purchase. His customer service was second to none, and he went above and beyond to make the experience enjoyable and hassle-free. If you’re looking to buy a motorcycle, I highly recommend asking for Brent—you won’t find a more helpful and professional salesperson. Thanks again for the great service!
